Auckland currently has a mixed waste collection system where all waste is collected together and
transported to landfill sites. This method is not sustainable as it leads to high levels of
contamination and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the city has limited
landfill space, which means that alternative solutions need to be explored.
To address these challenges, Auckland Council has implemented several waste minimization
initiatives, such as the introduction of recycling bins and food waste bin for waste reduction and
recycling. However, these efforts have been met with mixed success due to lack of public
awareness and participation.
